The Grand Canyon men's tennis team wrapped up their opening weekend of the season with a 7-0 loss to Utah on the road. The Lopes (0-2) were competitive in singles pushing two second sets to tiebreakers but were unable to pull out any wins.
Utah (1-0) took the doubles point with wins over the Lopes on courts two and three.
Justin Cvitanovic and
Freddie Grant fought in a 6-3 loss at No. 2 while
Valentin Lang and
Jiri Novak battled in a 7-5 loss at the top doubles position after the point had been secured by the Utes.
Utah won all six singles matches in straight sets extending their lead with quick wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
Loic Van Zeggelaar who won his first collegiate singles match yesterday at BYU, fought to a 6-2, 7-6 loss, pushing the tiebreaker to a 7-5 score.
Lang at No. 1 pushed his match to tiebreakers in the second set after dropping his first set 6-2, while
Wolmar Boris-Moller played well at No. 4 dropping a competitive 6-4, 6-4 match.
The Lopes will have a quick turnaround traveling down to Tucson for a midweek match at Arizona on Jan. 19.
