Grand Canyon men's soccer announced the signing of Texas high school defensive midfield standout Roger Sanguinetti on Wednesday.
"We are excited to welcome Roger to our team," GCU head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "He is another player initially identified at our ID camp, who we cannot wait to integrate into our team. Roger is a deep-lying, versatile, playmaking midfielder who possesses the ability to control and dictate the tempo of the game. With very good range of passing, equally strong combination play and high game IQ, Roger is capable of having an influential impact on games and positive impact on those playing around him."
Sanguinetti will join the Lopes this fall after playing four seasons in Katy, Texas, as a varsity starter and two-year captain for Cinco Ranch High School. He finished his prep career in the Houston area with 15 goals and 30 assists and was coached by his father, Fredy, as a senior. His father competed for Pan American University, now known as UTRGV, under coach Hyndman. Sanguinetti's abilities on the field were honored with two selections to the all-district first team and a spot on the all-region first team.
He also competed three seasons for the Cy Fair Dynamos, helping the club to the Elite National Premier League National Qualifiers in 2018 and the finals in 2019 and this year.
"I'm really excited about my future at GCU," Sanguinetti said. "I'm looking forward to playing for Coach Hyndman. Being from Texas, I have followed his career and have much respect for him. I'm looking forward to being part of the level of play that I saw on my official visit when GCU played Oregon State. I love the environment and school spirit at GCU. It's also one of the only universities that offers the ability to focus on sports psychology and minor in coaching, which is my plan for the future."
Sanguinetti also thrived off the field during high school, receiving the 2019 Citizenship Award, earning Academic All-District honors twice and make the Academic All-State team this year.
