Grand Canyon men's soccer announced the signing of Phoenix-area center back Andrew Bebbington on Tuesday to add to its incoming class for next season.
"Andy is a local player that we have known and have closely monitored for few years now," GCU head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "We believe he has grown to be one of the top defenders in Arizona for this current graduating class. Between his club team and high school team, as a captain, he brings a commanding and influential presence to the back line that positively transfers to the rest of the team.
"He is strong in duels, can quickly cover ground, and his size allows him to be very dominant in winning aerial balls. On the ball, he is comfortable in possession and what sets him apart is his ability to bring the ball out of the back with both feet breaking down opponents' lines with precise passes or combinations. We think Andy will provide a necessary depth to our back line and will make an immediate impact to our team."
Bebbington earned a multitude of awards as a high school player for Scottsdale Chaparral. As a junior, he earned a spot on the all-city team, the all-region first team and the all-state second team. He was named team captain for his senior season, when he led the Firebirds (14-3-1) to a state runner-up finish in Class 6A and repeated his all-city and all-region awards while moving up to the all-state first team to close out his high school career.
The defender competed at the club level for Real Salt Lake AZ, earning a spot as the captain of the U19 RSL AZ ECNL team. He also extended his playing experience internationally, training with youth teams over the summers in England and Serbia.
"I'm really looking forward to playing for GCU," Bebbington said. "I've always wanted to represent the city I'm from and playing for the Lopes is a great way to do it. I can't wait to get started in the fall."
