GCU falls in 4 sets at UC Irvine

No. 7 Anteaters take down Lopes 3-1
IRVINE, Calif. — No. 8 Grand Canyon men's volleyball fell in four sets at No. 7 UC Irvine on Friday. The Lopes recorded more points (68), kills (53), aces (seven) and assists (50) than the Anteaters, who won 25-17, 25-13, 24-26, 25-18.
Freshman outside hitter Camden Gianni led GCU (12-5) with 17 kills in the match, also recording two service aces and a career-high six blocks. Sophomores Christian Janke and Kyle Thompson also hit in double digits. Janke recorded 13 kills and two aces, while Thompson added 11 kills and two block assists.
In the first set, the score stayed within two points until the Anteaters (8-7) went on a three-point run to go ahead 13-9. The Lopes called timeout and broke the streak with a kill from Gianni, but UC Irvine responded with two more points to lead 15-10. The Anteaters held the lead through the rest of the set for a 25-17 set win. Sophomore opposite Hugo Fischer led the Lopes with four kills in the set, while Gianni recorded two kills and three blocks (one solo, two assists).
GCU led by as much as five early in the second set. The Lopes held the lead for a majority of the set, going ahead 17-13. A four-point run by UC Irvine tied the match at 18-18. A service error restored the Lopes lead, but the Anteaters tacked on two more points and held on for a 25-23 finish and 2-0 match lead.
UC Irvine led 4-1 to open the third set. The Lopes battled back, and a four-point run put them back in the lead at 7-6, forcing an Anteater timeout. The Lopes extended their lead to 10-7 and held on until UC Irvine tied it at 14. The teams battled back and forth, tying again at 18 and keeping it within one through extra points. A Thompson kill gave the Lopes a 25-24 lead, and Fischer closed out the set with a service ace to tighten the Anteaters match lead to 2-1.
GCU fell behind early in the fourth set and was unable to work its way back into the set, which UC Irvine won to take the match.
The Lopes return home to host Vanguard, North Greenville, Menlo and UC Irvine next Friday and Saturday at Antelope Gymnasium.
