Lopes split day in Antelope Gym

GCU defeats Vanguard, falls to North Greenville
No. 10 Grand Canyon men's volleyball picked up its first win of the weekend on Friday against Vanguard. The Lopes (13-6) defeated the Lions 3-1 in the first of four matches at Antelope Gymnasium this weekend.
In its first five-set match of the season, GCU lost to North Greenville on Friday night in a reverse sweep, 12-25, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18, 15-13.
GCU downs Vanguard 3-1
GCU recorded a season-high 11 blocks against Vanguard (10-6) with junior middle blocker Ian McLain and sophomore opposite Hugo Fischer recording five blocks each. Lopes sophomore outside hitter Christian Janke led the team with 13 kills in the match, also recording one ace and three blocks.
The Lopes started the match with a first-set win, defeating the Lions 25-21. GCU took an early 7-5 lead and held the lead until senior outside hitter Jack Burton secured match point with an ace. Freshman outside hitter Camden Gianni led GCU with four kills, two block assists and one service ace in the set.
GCU took a 2-0 lead by outscoring the Lions 25-20 in the next set. The Lopes recorded a .364 hitting percentage in the set, finishing with 10 kills and only two errors. Janke led the team with five kills, one ace and one dig in the set.
The Lopes battled into extra points in the third set versus Vanguard. The Lions managed to take the set, 29-27. Burton led the team in the set with seven kills, three digs and one block assist.
GCU bounced back with a 25-14 win in the fourth set to take the match. The Lopes finished with an impressive .609 hitting percentage, recording 15 kills with only one error. Janke hit .714 in the set, finishing with five kills, three blocks and one dig.
North Greenville rallies to upset
GCU came out swinging in the first set versus North Greenville (9-8). The Lopes outscored the Crusaders 25-12 to start the match, hitting their best percentage of the night at .429 with 11 kills and 2 errors. Gianni led the team with five kills in the set, hitting .500.
The Lopes took a two-set lead with a 25-18 win in the second set. Janke recorded four kills, one assist and one ace in the set, while sophomore middle blocker Kyle Thompson picked up three kills, one ace and one solo block.
North Greenville pulled off the reverse sweep, taking the last three sets 25-23, 25-18, 15-13.
GCU is back in action on Saturday to face Menlo at noon and No. 7 UC Irvine at 6 p.m. in Antelope Gymnasium.
