HONOLULU, Hawaii — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began their three match week with a 6-1 loss to Hawaii on the road.
The match started on the right foot for the Lopes (2-6) as they took the doubles point but Hawaii (3-5) rebounded well and took all six singles matches.
In doubles the Lopes saw wins come from the No. 1 and No. 3 positions.
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr at the top court won in dominant fashion 6-1 and capatlized on Hawaii unforced errors and mistakes to win. The point was clinched by
Ludovica Infantino and
Autum Prudhomme at No. 3 with a 6-4 win while
Natasha Puehse and
Jana Weiss were unfinished at No. 2 tied at 4-4.
In singles Hawaii jumped out to an early advantage by taking first set on five of the six courts. A retirement at No. 2 by Buhr and a 6-2, 6-0 loss by Occhipinti at No. 1 turned momentum into Hawaii's favor as they regained the lead.
Two more straight set losses for GCU at Nos. 4 and 6 clinced the match for the Rainbow Wahine, while Puehse at No. 2 and Lo Pumo at No. 6 went to three sets but ultimately lost in 10-point tiebreakers.
The Lopes will wrap up their stay in Honolulu tomorrow with a match against Long Beach State at 2 p.m. (Phoenix time).
