After having a week off, the Grand Canyon women's tennis team will have a busy four-day stretch with two matches in Honolulu against Hawaii and Long Beach State on Thursday and Friday, respectively, before coming home to face Cal Poly on Sunday.
THREE THINGS TO KNOW
- ROAD SUCCESS: While the Lopes have yet to win a dual match at the GCU Tennis Facility, they have won a pair of duals on the road. Those two wins came against Montana State 5-2 in a neutral-site match and a 4-1 win over UC Irvine on the road.
- TURNING THINGS AROUND: Senior Emilia Occhipinti has been in a nice groove, winning her last three singles matches. All three of those wins have come in three sets at No. 1 against UC Irvine, San Jose State and Colorado State.
- MARCHING TO MARCH: With the month of February wrapping up this weekend, the month of March brings eight matches, including the start of WAC play. The Lopes will head to Las Cruces, New Mexico, for the first WAC cluster against Chicago State, UT Rio Grande Valley and Kansas City in neutral-site matches.
SCOUTING
Hawaii struggled to start the season with three losses against ranked teams. Since then, the Rainbow Wahine have won at home in Big West play against UC Irvine and on the road at San Diego State. Most recently, Hawaii lost 4-1 to USC in a neutral-site game. Satsuki Takamura leads the team with a 4-3 singles record while Takamura, along with Bojana Markovic, have two singles wins at No. 2.
Long Beach State has played well after dropping its opening match at USC to win five of the last six matches, including Big West wins over UC Davis and UC Riverside. Lalita Devarakonda has been solid on the bottom of the singles lineup with a 6-1 record at Nos. 5 and 6. Emma Bardet and Wiktoria Rutkowska are 5-0 in doubles.
Cal Poly has been on a tear this season with just one loss at San Diego State so far. The Mustangs started February with shutout wins over Nevada, San Jose State and Sacramento State. Melissa LaMette, Emily Monaghan and Delanie Dunkle share the team lead in singles wins with six while Dunkie and LaMette have a 5-2 doubles record at No. 2.
LAST TIME OUT
- GCU dropped home matches to San Jose State and Colorado State.
- Occhipinti won both singles matches at No. 1 while freshman Natasha Puehse improved her team-leading singles record to 5-2.
- GCU lost both doubles points to the Rams and Spartans.
WHAT'S NEXT
- The Lopes will travel to San Diego State on March 7.
