Lopes fall to Concordia on the road

GCU drops 4-set match at Concordia
IRVINE, Calif. – No. 8 Grand Canyon men's volleyball battled in a close loss to Concordia Irvine on Thursday.
The Lopes (12-4, 4-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) played four sets decided by three points for fewer with Concordia (8-10, 2-4 MPSF) winning 25-23, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22.
GCU junior opposite David Kisiel led the Lopes with 16 kills in the match, also recording six digs and two block assists. Sophomore outside hitter Christian Janke also recorded double-digit kills with 13, along with eight digs and one block assist.
The first set was tied at 5-5 before GCU stretched a lead to as much as 17-13. Concordia got back in the game with a six-point run to lead 19-17. The Lopes were unable to regain the lead, falling 25-23. Freshman outside hitter Camden Gianni led GCU with five kills and four digs.
GCU tied the match in the second set, reversing the score to defeat the Eagles 25-23. Concordia took an early lead, but the Lopes tied it at 10-10. The match stayed within two points until the end of the set, when GCU pulled ahead to win with a five-kill set from Kisiel.
The 25-23 third set stayed within two points until the Eagles pulled ahead with four-point run to lead 12-7. GCU kept it close but was unable to regain a lead.
In the fourth set, the Eagles took an 8-4 lead and kept it to the end of the 25-22 decisive set.
The Lopes play Saturday at UC Irvine at 8 p.m. (Phoenix time).
