MISSOULA, Mont. — The Grand Canyon women's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to Montana on Friday.
GCU freshman
Natasha Puehse recorded two wins on the day to lead the Lopes (0-3), who also received a singles win from junior
Martina Lo Pumo at No. 6.
"Girls put up a good fight today," Lopes head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "We narrowly lost the doubles, came down to the clinching match on court one and our girls did a great job fighting back from 0-4 to 4-4 but couldn't cross that finish line."
In doubles, GCU juniors
Autum Prudhomme and
Ludovica Infantino were unable to hold off Montana's Alex Walker and Lauren Dunlap, losing 6-2. Puehse and sophomore
Jana Weiss were able to bounce back with 6-2 win for GCU at court two while Lopes seniors
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr lost 6-4 in the deciding match.
Heading into singles, only four matches were able to play at once instead of the usual six. The Grizzlies (1-3) used that to their advantage winning the first three matches to get to four points. Their first win of the season was clinched by Maria Goheen winning in straight sets at No. 3 over Buhr.
GCU saw more strong play from Puehse at No. 2, picking up her second win in a row in straight sets. Lo Pumo followed with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 6 to close out the match.
"Another great performance by
Natasha Puehse, our freshman at two," Prudhomme said. "It's great to see her performing well and it was great to see Martina take care of business at court six."
GCU will face Montana State (0-4) on Sunday at 9 a.m., when they will compete again at the Peak Racquet Club in Missoula.
