Lopes head west to kick off new season
The Grand Canyon women's tennis team will kick off its fall season this weekend at the SDSU Fall Classic in San Diego. This will be the fifth straight year that the Lopes will begin the fall season with this event.
The Lopes will compete in six singles draws and three doubles draws with play beginning Friday morning and running through Sunday. GCU is joined by host San Diego State, UTEP, San Jose State, Cal State Northridge, McNeese State and Utah at this year's event.
Senior Celia Morel and freshman Natasha Puehse will represent GCU in the top singles flight while Lopes junior Celina Buhr will play in the second flight.
Puehse also will pair up with sophomore transfer Jana Weiss in the top doubles flight, while the All-WAC first-team doubles pair of junior Autum Prudhomme and Morel will compete in the third flight. The duo ended last season on an 11-match winning streak.
The Lopes boast a deep roster this season, returning all eight players from last season along with one freshman and one transfer. Of those eight returners, five earned All-WAC awards last season.
Last year, GCU had a strong showing at the SDSU Fall Classic by winning consolation brackets in singles and doubles.
