A program with its sights set on a return trip to the NCAA tournament has built a schedule that fits the bill.
The Grand Canyon men's soccer team announced a 17-game slate with a nonconference schedule full of challenges. Of the Lopes' six nonconference opponents, four advanced to the NCAA tournament last season and three ended the regular season in the top-25 poll.
"This year, we've come to the point where we have a really good schedule here," GCU head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "It's going to be demanding and going to be challenging."
The year opens with the hosting of Northern Kentucky on Friday, Aug. 30, at GCU Stadium. Since the opening of the Lopes new facility in 2016, GCU has averaged 6,525 fans when it opens the season at home. GCU looks to build upon a streak of five consecutive wins in home openers.
"That's one of our key points of the season is getting it started at home," Hyndman said. "We try to get a home game every year to open the season so we can get our students and our fans behind us."
The first road trip points GCU in the direction of the Bay Area, where the Lopes will face last season's only undefeated team. Saint Mary's finished the year ranked No. 5 and posted an 18-0-2 mark before the Gaels' season ended in the third round of the NCAA tournament against Stanford. GCU's first road trip also includes a match against Santa Clara.
The Lopes return home to GCU Stadium to host a Pac-12 opponent for the first time in program history. GCU welcomes Oregon State, which finished the year ranked No. 22 and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament.
GCU's nonconference slate ends with a pair of road contests at NCAA tournament teams. The Lopes visit Virginia Tech, a third-round participant last year. Nonconference wraps with a visit to UC Riverside, the Big West Tournament champions.
WAC play opens at home against Incarnate Word on Saturday, Sep. 28. Throughout conference play, GCU will play host to Incarnate Word, San Jose State, Seattle U, Houston Baptist, Kansas City and UNLV. The WAC Tournament final rematch with San Jose State is set for Friday, Oct. 11.
The Lopes will make visits to conference foes California Baptist, CSU Bakersfield, UT Rio Grande Valley, Air Force and Utah Valley.
"We do have a pretty even split between home and away," Hyndman said. "Last year, we had Air Force and Utah Valley at home, where we turned our whole season around. I think the teams that are going to be tough for us at home will be the traditional teams we've had problems with: San Jose State, Seattle U and UNLV. On the road, there are some teams you really have to watch out for."
The conference tournament is hosted by Air Force and begins on Wednesday, Nov. 13.
