SEATTLE — The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will wrap up the regular season with a final WAC cluster hosted by Seattle U. The Lopes will face New Mexico State on Friday and UT Rio Grande Valley on Saturday.
The Lopes (15-6, 3-0 WAC) and the Aggies (12-8, 3-0 WAC) sit tied atop the conference standings heading into Friday's match. The winner of that match would clinch the WAC regular-season title because the remaining conference teams all have two losses.
GCU and New Mexico State met earlier this year in a nonconference match at the Golden State Invitational on March 9. The Lopes won 4-0, giving head coach
Greg Prudhomme his 250th career win at GCU.
The Lopes have swept the past two matches against UTRGV, one win coming in Kansas City last season and the other coming in Seattle in 2016.
One of the strengths of GCU this season has been the ability to get ahead early in matches by taking the doubles point. The Lopes have won the doubles point 16 times and each doubles pair has at least 11 wins. The No. 2 pair of
Valentin Lang and
Jakub Novak and the No. 3 pair of
Freddie Grant and
Lucas Grego are each perfect in the WAC at 3-0.
Singles also has been strong for the Lopes this season, when they have won almost 70 percent of their matches. Heading into this weekend, Novak, Grant and Lang all boast winning streaks of five or more while each player has won at least 11 matches this season.
