The Grand Canyon men's tennis team will leave Arizona for the first time this spring and head to Tennessee for first-time matchups with Belmont (4-3) and Lipscomb (3-2) on Friday and Saturday.
The Lopes (3-1) are off to a hot start thanks to a 3-0 record at home. Those three wins include two 7-0 sweeps and a 6-1 win over Florida Gulf Coast. The lone loss for the Lopes this season came in Tucson at Arizona. Now, the team will have to prepare for the longest road trip of the season.
For the next month, the Lopes will play on the road, starting this weekend in Nashville before heading to California for matchups against Saint Mary's, UC Santa Bárbara and nationally ranked UCLA and a trip finale to the Golden State Invitational on March 8-10.
GCU has racked up the wins with solid production from the top four singles positions, which all own either a 3-1 or 4-0 record.
Lorenzo Fucile,
Mathieu Rajaonah and
Valentin Lang each has gone 3-1 at the top three positions while senior
Lucas Grego is 4-0 from No. 4. Sophomore
Freddie Grant also has played well with a 3-0 record at No. 5 and No. 6 while freshman
Jakub Novak picked up his first career singles win in the last match against Sacramento State.
In doubles, the Lopes have seen the same success with Fucile/Rajaonah owning a 4-0 record from the No. 1 position. Lang/Novak at No. 2 and Grego/Grant at No. 3 each sit at 2-1 and both clinched the doubles points in matches this season.
The Lopes now turn their attention to Belmont and Lipscomb teams, who are coming off appearances in their conference tournaments. Belmont finished last season as Ohio Valley regular-season champions with a 14-11 record with nine of those wins coming at home. They were defeated in the championship match of the OVC tournament, losing 4-3 to Tennessee Tech.
Lipscomb finished 2018 with an 8-12 record and a 3-3 conference record in the Atlantic Sun Conference. Lipscomb advanced to the conference tournament but was defeated by No. 5 Kennesaw State 4-1.
