The Grand Canyon women's tennis team got back in the win column on Sunday with a 5-2 victory over Sacramento State.
The Lopes (3-7) won the doubles point and the first three singles matches to beat the Hornets (0-4) in dominating fashion at the GCU Tennis Facility.
"Real proud of the girls win today," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "We've had a string of losses, some close ones, some tough ones. So it's great to see they've kept their spirit up in just about all of their losses. They have kept a good attitude, kept fighting and stayed mentally tough."
The Lopes took the doubles point with dominating wins at Nos. 1 and 3. Their top pair of juniors
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr won 6-1 and junior
Celia Morel teamed with sophomoreÂ
Autum Prudhomme to clinch the point with a 6-2 win.
"It was great to see Autum and Celia clinch the doubles after Emilia and Celina had another great performance at court one,"
Greg Prudhomme said. "That's nice to see them getting momentum back, and we carried that momentum into singles."
The Lopes did just that, taking each of the first four singles matches in straight sets. Buhr won 6-2, 6-4, at No. 3, followed by her doubles partner, Occhipinti, winning easily 6-2, 6-2, at No. 1.
The team win was clinched by sophomore
Ludovica Infantino, who recorded her first singles win of the season at No. 5. Morel won her first match at the No. 2 position with a straight-set win that extended the Lopes lead to 5-0.
"We won the first set on all but one of the singles courts," Prudhomme said. "That was a great job and we just rode that momentum until we got three wins. Ludovica got her first win of the dual-match season to clinch the fourth point. And great for Emilia to get two wins in a row at No. 1. That's a tough position out there and she's shown on numerous occasions this season that she's handling that position great."
The Lopes will enjoy eight days off before their next home match on March 4 against Portland.
