After a two-week competition break that focused on training, the Grand Canyon cross country team will put the racing singlets back on Saturday morning to race at the Capital Cross Country Challenge in Sacramento, Calif.
"This weekend is the Capital XC, which is the same course as (NCAA) Regionals so this will be a chance for us to preview the course and have a chance to be competitive in a meet with a larger field," GCU head coach
Sara Slattery said. "New Mexico State will be there as well so we will have one other WAC school to measure up against before Santa Clara (Oct. 13) and conference (Oct. 27)."
After racing well at the Dave Murray Invitational in Tucson two weeks ago, the Lopes will compete on the fast course where they will race in November for the NCAA West Regional Championships.
"This is going to be a good race," Slattery said. "As long as it isn't wet, it's a 'grass track' so you can run pretty fast on it."
This will be the Lopes' first 6- and 8-kilometer races of the year. The women will run a 6K and the men will run an 8K. When the Lopes return for the NCAA West Regional Championships, the men will run 10 kilometers while the women run a 6K again.
"This is our first 6K and 8K of the year and will be a chance for some of the freshmen getting used to distance, learning what that's like on a pretty fast course," Slattery said.
This is the first of two races before the WAC Championships, which will be held in Seattle this year.
