RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Grand Canyon men's cross country team raced to a second-place finish Saturday as the regular season came to a close at the Riverside Invitational.
After not having a top-three finish since 2021, the Lopes managed to secure top-three finishes in every meet during this regular season.
GCU sophomore
Michael Archie continued his dominant run, finishing fourth overall by completing the race in 23 minutes, 44.6 seconds.
"It was a big day for the Lopes," GCU head coach
Shayla Houlihan said. "
Michael Archie set the tone with a personal best and came less than a second from the school record."
Lopes senior
Greyson Akers was the next top finisher with a time of 24:13.9 in the 8k run.
"As a group, the guys ran fantastic, posting the best team average in GCU history," Houlihan said, "I'm really proud of how they're progressing at this point in the season and am excited to carry this momentum into the championship portion of their schedule."
After Archie and Akers, freshman
Archie Budding (36th), junior
Tristen Coyle (50th) and sophomore
Jack Sindt (60th)Â rounded out the top finishers for Grand Canyon.
On the women's side, previous Mountain West Freshman of the Week winner
June Zimmerman was the top finisher for the Lopes, running 21:20.7 in the 6k.
The next to cross the finish line was sophomore transfer
Grace Scott, who rose her way to the Lopes' second-best time.
'"Grace had a breakthrough race that really stood out," Houlihan said.
The Lopes' top five also included the freshman trio of
Isabella Velazquez (77th),
Stella Hall (80th) and
Carina Trujillo (97th).
Houlihan's confidence in the women's team is growing with how her team fights.
"While we don't have quite the same depth as the men right now, the group continues to learn, grow and push forward," Houlihan said.
The Lopes head to Fresno, California, on Oct. 31 to compete in their first Mountain West Championships.
