PHOENIX, Ariz. — The Lopes hope to keep the momentum going Friday where they compete in their first Mountain West Cross Country Championships.
The men's squad is projected to finish 7th out of 10.
The Lopes have made great strides in their first year in the Mountain West Conference under head coach
Shayla Houlihan.
In just her second year at the helm, she has been able to lead the Lopes to the fastest men's team in school history who have been able to finish in the top three of every meet in the regular season. They have been led by
Sophomore
Michael Archie, who has had a record-breaking year. Archie has been able to hold the standard for the Lopes by placing first individually at the Biola Invitational as well as getting Athlete of the Week for the Mountain West.
Shayla had this to say about the men's team concluding their last meet, "I'm really proud of how they're progressing at this point in the season and excited to carry this momentum into the championship portion of the schedule."
Freshman
Archie Budding is also a name to look out for the Lopes. Budding won Mountain West Freshman of the Week after a top 10 finish at the Biola Invitational.
The women's side is projected an 8
th place finish out of 12.
"The group continues to grow and push forward. There's a lot to be excited about where the team is headed" said Shayla on the women's team.
The Lopes handed a Mountain West Freshman of the Week award to
June Zimmerman who has been a top five finisher for the Lopes consistently.Â
The women also had a top three finish this season in the Dave Murray Invitational beating out New Mexico State and Arizona State. The young team has continued to grow throughout the year and are ready to compete in the Mountain West Cross Country Championships.
