SACRAMENTO – In its largest field of the season, the Grand Canyon cross country teams finished third in the women's race and seventh in the men's race Saturday at the 26-team Capital Cross Challenge, respectively.
Junior
Paige Hildebrandt finished highest for the Lopes, crossing in fourth place in the women's 6-kilometer race. Senior
Daniel Flores crossed the finish line first for the men, finishing 18th overall.
"Overall, it was a really good day," GCU head coach
Sara Slattery said. "The course ran a little slower than the last couple of years, but we still had some good finishes."
In the first collegiate race of the day, Flores led the men's pack, finishing in a time of 24 minutes, 46.5 seconds. Freshman
Blake Bennett finished second for GCU, taking 33rd overall. Three freshmen finished among GCU's top five in the newcomers' first 8-kilometer race of their careers.
"We had several freshmen race in their first 8K and first race that large," Slattery said. "So we are learning how to navigate through a large group of racers. With a month until conference, we have a lot of work to do, but I am confident in our team."
In the women's 6K, Hildebrandt led a tight pack for GCU in which four girls finished within 20 seconds of each other. Junior
Elizabeth Balsan finished second for the Lopes, followed by senior
Erika Wallace and junior
Lindy Jacobson. Hildebrandt finished in 21:34.0 and Jacobson, the fourth finisher for GCU, finished in 21:55.6.
"This was a good step going toward conference," Slattery said. "Overall, a good day."
