The last opportunity to prepare for the WAC Cross Country Championships beckons for the Grand Canyon cross country team as it heads to the historically fast Santa Clara Bronco Invitational on Saturday in Sunnyvale, Calif.
Last year at the Bronco Invitational, GCU's
Mariah Montoya set the school record in the 6-kilometer race with a time of 20 minutes, 53.9 seconds.
"We are just getting in our last race before conference so we have still been training pretty hard," Lopes head coach
Sara Slattery said. "We had a few people sick the last couple weeks, but we are all healthy now and are ready to run fast."
The GCU women's team is coming off a third-place finish at the Capital Cross Challenge in Sacramento, Calif., where junior
Paige Hildebrandt finished fourth two weeks ago.
The Lopes will be competing with fellow WAC programs CSU Bakersfield and Seattle U at Saturday's race.
"We have our full team," Slattery said. "Ten men, nine women, essentially our conference team is coming this weekend, focusing on what we want to do for conference. We are looking to get in one last hard effort and looking to spread some fast times."
The Lopes will race the distances they will race at the WAC Championships -- 6 kilometers for the women and 8 kilometers for the men.
The men's race will begin first at 8:45 a.m. (Phoenix time) and the women will race at 9:30 a.m.
