Grand Canyon head coach
Greg Prudhomme was named the Steve Wilkinson USPTA National College Coach of the Year, becoming the first Lope to ever win the award.
The award was presented to Prudhomme this weekend at the Tennis Teachers Conference in New York City.
"I am very honored and humbled to have received this award," Prudhomme said. "The recipients of the Steve Wilkinson College Coach of the Year from all of the previous years along with the outstanding organization that the USPTA is makes this a special award. I am grateful to the many people in my life that have supported, assisted and made my coaching career possible.
"Earning this award was made possible by a collaborative effort from my family, my friends, my students and players, the executives and athletic administration at GCU, my coaching mentors and the USPTA."
Prudhomme accomplished much in the last calendar year on and off the tennis court. He coached the men's and women's tennis teams to the semifinals of the WAC Tournament. In the offseason, Prudhomme was named USPTA Southwest Coach of the Year, the USPTA Southwest District Coordinator for the Phoenix area and the Head Tester for the USPTA Southwest Division.
Entering his 12th season as the tennis head coach at GCU, Prudhomme has taken the men's and women's programs to new heights. At the Division II level, he led the women's team to four NCAA tournament appearances in seven seasons and had the Lopes nationally ranked as high as No. 10.
On the men's side, Prudhomme led the Lopes to three straight top-25 finishes and an appearance in the quarterfinals of the 2012 NCAA Tournament. Prudhomme earned several accolades, including the 2011 ITA Coach of the Year, the Men's and Women's ITA West Region Coach of the Year and the PacWest Women's Coach of the Year.
Prudhomme then led both teams to Division I in 2013 and kept both programs performing at high levels. In the past five seasons, the women's team has captured two WAC regular season titles while the men were co-champions in 2016. Prudhomme was named WAC Coach of the Year four times.
