IRVINE, Calif. — Reigning WAC Freshman of the Year
Josh Drack scored a pair of goals and newcomer
Jaime Delor scored once as the Grand Canyon men's soccer team unofficially opened the season with a 3-1 exhibition victory over San Francisco on Saturday afternoon.
"This was a good start for the team," head coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "Considering we've only had four or so practices, it was good to win against a good team. The chemistry and organization are just starting to develop but will continue to grow."
GCU used a separate 11-man group each half. The first period featured mostly returning players with the exception of Delor and
Marios Andreou in the lineup. The second half consisted of mostly newcomers out on the pitch.
Drack took full advantage of his increased offensive opportunities, scoring twice. Delor -- one of the top scorers in the junior college ranks -- announced his arrival at GCU with a goal of his own. The Lopes staked out a 3-0 lead by halftime.
The Dons scored their only goal of the match on a penalty kick in the second half.
"We still have some players waiting to be cleared and a few minor injuries," Hyndman said. "The addition of those players will make us that much stronger going forward. That's the exciting part."
Both GCU and San Francisco are receiving top-25 votes in
the preseason United Soccer Coaches poll. The Dons are coming off of a 2017 campaign where they advanced to the NCAA Tournament and won their opening match against California.
The Lopes' preseason training continues in Southern California this week. They will play their final of two exhibition matches against UCLA on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
