DENVER – After three school records fell this past weekend, the Lopes secured a full sweep of the Western Athletic Conference Athlete of the Week awards with
Ryan Girk,
Jesse Newman,
Mariah Montoya and
Tarasue Barnett winning honors.
Girk, a senior from Phoenix, won both events he competed in this past weekend at the UC San Diego Triton Invite. His first event was the 100-meter dash where he crossed the finish line in 10.49 for a WAC best time, ranking him 39
th in the West Region. Girk then competed in the 200-meter dash with another WAC best time of 20.99. He is now tied in the national rankings at 65 as he outran 17 competitors.
Newman, a sophomore from Aloha, Oregon, placed second out of 13 competitors in the javelin throw event this past weekend. His mark of 64.93 meters was good enough to be the top in the WAC, setting a new school record and ranking him 50
th in the nation.
Montoya, a senior from Mesa, Arizona, placed second in the 5,000-meter run out of ten competitors at the UCSD Triton Invite. Her time of 17 minutes, 11.72 seconds set a new Grand Canyon record and places her fourth in the WAC and 63
rd in the West Region.
Barnett, a sophomore from Kingston, Jamaica, competed in the discus and shot put at the UCSD Triton Invite. She placed second out of eight athletes in the discus with a mark of 56.61 meters. Barnett then had a mark of 14.17 meters in the shot put ranking her third in the WAC.
