COLLEGE STATION, Texas –
Scott Marshall waited five years to go to the NCAA Championships and in his redshirt senior season the Desert Vista High School alum became the first GCU athlete to compete in a Division I National Championship. Marshall finishes as a Second Team All-American.
Marshall cleared the opening height of 5.30 meters with ease, a whole eight inches below his personal best and moved onto the next height of 5.40, a height he has cleared previously many times. The second height was a little too much for Marshall as he was unable to clear in his three allotted attempts.
"I am very proud of Scott," head coach
Tom Flood said. "He represented both our university and our program well, and at the highest level of collegiate athletics."
Marshall, Grand Canyon's first NCAA Division I Championship competitor finished tied for 13th in the country, and finishes as the Lopes' first Division I Second Team All-American.
Marshall's GCU experience didn't end the way he wanted or dreamt it would but the pole vaulter was still grateful.
"It was a great experience," Marshall said. "I'm disappointed in my performance and I would have liked to jump higher but this is an experience I will never forget.
"I am excited for outdoor season and I can't wait to be back at Outdoor NCAA Championships where I look to jump well."
With the outdoor season approaching quickly, Marshall will look to be a top 16 finalist and make the cut for NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships.
Marshall and the Lopes get the outdoor season underway in Tucson March 16-17 at the Willie Williams Invitational.
