PHOENIX—The Grand Canyon women's tennis team is ready to defend their 2017 regular season title, with the opening week of conference play beginning on Friday. The Lopes (5-10) will face Chicago State (4-13), UTRGV (7-8), and New Mexico State (5-10) on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday in Edinburg, Texas.
The Lopes are facing high expectations heading into conference play, on Tuesday the pre-conference coaches poll picked GCU as the favorites to win the conference. Last year's regular season chaps finished with 23 total points and earned three first-place votes, and edged out last year's conference tournament champions UMKC, by a single point.
New Mexico State earned the final first-place vote, and finished with 13 points tying them with UTRGV at third. Seattle U came in at fourth with 11 points, and Chicago State earned eight points putting them in sixth.
GCU was picked over the UMKC, despite coming into conference play tied for the fourth best overall record with New Mexico State, the Roos currently have the best record at 8-8 and are riding a three-match winning streak.
The Lopes faced tough competition during non-conference play and will look to rebound after losing eight of their previous nine matches. There have been bright spots however, senior
Kylie Waschuk has won five of her last seven singles matches at No. 6, and is currently on a three-match winning streak. She also leads the team in singles wins with nine, after only competing in doubles last year. Sophomore
Celina Buhr also is on a three-match winning streak in singles, and teammate
Emilia Occhipinti has gone 4-1 from the No. 3 position.
The doubles team of Occhipinti and
Lana Rinaldi have found success at the number one position, winning four matches, and the freshman duo of
Martina Lo Pumo and
Autum Prudhomme lead the team in singles wins with five.
Last season, the Lopes swept conference play and earned their second regular season championship in three years. In four years of of conference play the Lopes have gone 18-3 in conference play and they have lost one match in the last three seasons.
