EDINBURG, Texas—The Grand Canyon women's tennis team got off to a great start in conference play shutting out Chicago State 7-0. It was the team's fourth straight win against the Cougars and the Lopes have regrouped after losing eight of their previous nine matches.
"The girls got off to just the start we were looking for," head coach
Greg Prudhomme said. "We started off playing really good doubles getting the point, and they kept the momentum going into the singles. Not only did we get the first set on four of the courts, but we kept those leads and Martina (Lo Pumo) and Lana (Rinaldi) did a good job fighting back after dropping the first set and winning in three. We got wins on all the singles courts which is good for the girl's confidence going forward."
GCU started strong in doubles competition taking the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. After the freshman duo of
Martina Lo Pumo and
Autum Prudhomme lost at No. 3, the Lopes rebounded with wins at No. 1 and No. 2.
Lana Rinaldi and
Emilia Occhipinti won a close match 6-4, and
Valentina Mokrova and
Celina Buhr clinced the doubles point with a 6-2 win.
Heading into singles, the Lopes started strong taking the first set in four of the six courts. Those four matches all ended in straight set wins by
Kylie Waschuk, Mokrova, Occhipinti, and
Celina Buhr. Waschuk picked up her fourth straight win and team leading tenth singles win. Lo Pumo and Rinaldi dropped the first set at No. 1 and No. 2 but both rebounded to take the second sets and closed out their matches in three sets.
WAC play continues tomorrow when GCU takes on UTRGV (8-8) at 11 a.m. (MDT). The Vaqueros defeated UMKC in a close 4-3 match today.
