PHOENIX—The Grand Canyon men's tennis team (10-4) will wrap up non-conference play this weekend in Fort Myers, Florida when the Lopes take on Florida Gulf Coast (4-7) and Illinois State (9-4) on Friday and Sunday.
The Lopes enter the weekend playing some of their best tennis of the season. Last weekend in California, GCU won three matches in a row and were crowned champions of the Golden State Invite. The Lopes defeated Nevada, host school UC Davis, and UT Arlington in the final.
In the past three weeks the Lopes have won six of their last eight matches, and became the first team in the WAC to reach the 10 win mark. It is the eighth straight yaer that the Lopes have won at least 10 matches in a season.
A trio of Lopes are riding winning streaks in singles heading into this weekend. Junior
Lucas Grego is currently leading the team with six singles wins in a row, and now sits at a perfect 4-0 at No. 5. His current winning streak has awarded him with consecutive WAC Singles Player of the Week awards. Sophomores
Valentin Lang and
Lorenzo Fucile have won their last two matches at No. 2 and No. 3, and Lang is tied with Grego and
Gregoire Balenci with a season high eight singles wins.
In doubles, the pair of Grego and
Freddie Grant played well last weekend. The two were awarded WAC Doubles Players of the Week after they won two straight matches against UC Davis and UT Arlington at No. 3. The pair is second on the team in doubles wins with three,
Mathieu Rajaonah and Fucile lead the way with five.
The two opponents the Lopes will face this weekend will be a challenge. Despite the losing record for Florida Gulf Coast, the team owns a 4-1 record at home, their only loss came against William and Mary on Tuesday. The Eagles also beat UT Arlington, the team the Lopes beat in the championship match last weekend.
Illinois State has been strong at home as well owning a 7-1 record, but is 2-3 on the road. The Redbirds have been playing well as of late, winning four of their last six matches. This will be the first meeting for the Lopes and the two schools in the Division I era.
