PHOENIX—Members of both Grand Canyon tennis teams earned WAC weekly awards on Tuesday. Freshman
Freddie Grant and sophomore
Emilia Occhipinti were named WAC Singles Players of the Week for Feb. 19-25.
Grant and the men's team competed at Sacramento State and Santa Clara on Friday and Saturday. Grant playing at No. 6, notched his first singles win of the dual-match season against the Hornets, beating Bernardo Moraes in straight sets 6-2, 6-2. The next day Grant continued his great play winning at Santa Clara the next day. Despite the team loss Grant won in three sets against Kamran Khan 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Occhipinti and the women's team was also on the road last week, they took on Hawaii and San Diego State in Honolulu. The Lopes only played singles in the two matches because of the threat of rain during the weekend. Occhipinti played at No. 3, and won against Hawaii 6-0, 6-4 and San Diego State 6-3, 6-3. The team win against San Diego State was historical for GCU, it was the first team win for the Lopes against the Aztecs in Division I history.
Next week the men's team will compete in Albuquerque in the Mountain Pacific Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The teams and matches have yet to be announced. The women's team will enjoy a week off before heading to Des Moines, Iowa to take on Montana State and Drake on March 10 and 11.
