SANTA CLARA, Calif.—GCU faced a tough test against Santa Clara on Saturday. The Broncos extended their winning streak to seven with a 6-1 win over the Lopes. Freshman
Freddie Grant provided the lone win for the Lopes in singles.
Santa Clara got off to a quick start in doubles.
Valentin Lang and
Gregoire Balenci were beaten at No. 1 and the Broncos secured the doubles point with a win at No. 2 over
Lorenzo Fucile and
Justin Cvitanovic 6-4.
Lucas Grego and Grant's match at No. 3 was unfinished, the pair was down 5-6 when play was stopped.
In singles the Lopes forced a third set in two of the six matches, one of them being Grant at No. 6. The freshman from England, took the first set in his match against Kamran Khan 6-3. After losing the second set, he regrouped and took the match with a 6-4 win in set number three. Grego also forced a third set at No. 4, after winning a competitive second set 7-5. But he would run out of gas in the third set losing 6-1.
Next weekend the Lopes will head to Albuquerque and will participate in the Mountain Pacific Invitational. The teams and times have yet to be announced but the invitational will start on March 3 and conclude on March 4.
