Grand Canyon earned a statement win Friday, knocking off No. 63 Boise State 5-2 at GCU Tennis Facility to remain unbeaten at home and improve to 10-1 on the season.
The win also marked GCU head coach
Ross Wilson's 100th career win as a coach.
The Lopes started off doubles play against a strong Boise State team with junior
Brice Patoux and sophomore
Daniel Jankoski pulling off their first win on Court 1, where they took down Carson Baker and Avery Tallakson 6-3.
On Court 3, GCU junior
Charlie Pade and freshman partner
Tim Hohmann sealed the deal for the Lopes, getting a 6-4 win to give GCU the double point.
In singles, the Lopes fell on Courts 2 and 4, giving the Broncos a 2-1 lead.
Jankoski got the Lopes going over on Court 3 in a quick 7-5, 6-3 win against Stewart Aronso.
GCU sophomore
Tristan Berard, who only has one loss this year in singles, got the lead for the Lopes after defeating Filip Soderqvist 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. Berard is now 10-1 on the season.
The clinching point came down to either Court 5 with Patoux or Court 6 with Pade.
Pade eventually took the win in emphatic fashion, sealing the deal against the back-to-back Mountain West champions. Pade won 6-2 in the first set before losing 6-7 (5-7 in a tiebreaker). He won the third set 6-4, giving GCU the dual match win and improving his record to 7-0 in singles.
The Lopes finished out the last court with Patoux taking a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 Court 5 win against Lukas Velik, extending his win streak to 11 matches in singles and remaining undefeated on the year.
When Wilson was asked about the statement victory, he kept his words short and simple, "We compete."
The Lopes finish their busy weekend at home Sunday against UC San Diego.
