The Grand Canyon tennis teams will host the annual GCU Invitational at the Paseo Racquet Center in Glendale this weekend. The women will compete Friday and Saturday while the men will compete Friday through Sunday.
The invitational will feature teams from across the state including Arizona, Northern Arizona, Mesa Community College and Arizona Christian. The competition will start on Friday morning at 10 a.m. with men's doubles and 12 p.m. with women's doubles.
Both teams last competed at the ITA Southwest Regionals. The men, competing at Pepperdine, had a strong showing with junior
Lorenzo Fucile advancing to the round of 16 in the main singles draw and freshman
Jakub Novak advancing to the quarterfinals in the consolation draw. Fucile also paired up with senior
Mathieu Rajaonah and advanced to the round of 16 in the doubles draw.
The women competed at San Diego and picked up four wins in extra singles matches. The biggest win came from sophomore
Ludovica Infantino who defeated Arizona State's Grace Koester 6-4, 6-1 in the first individual matchup between the two schools in GCU's Division I history. The Lopes also saw the doubles teams of
Autum Prudhomme and
Celia Morel, and
Emilia Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr both earn victories at the event.
