The Grand Canyon women's soccer team opens the WACÂ Tournament with a first-round matchup against fifth-seeded Utah Valley. The Lopes tied a pair of double-overtime contests to end the regular season and earned a fourth-place seed for postseason play.
The Lopes and the Wolverines, the tournament hosts, will square off at 2 p.m. (Phoenix time) on Wednesday at Clyde Field.
Scouting No. 4 seed GCU (6-12-2, 3-3-2 WAC)
The Lopes are 1-3-1 against Utah Valley throughout head coach Derek's Leader's time at the helm of the GCU program. The one win came at home in 2016.
Senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton crossed the century mark in saves with 101, which leads the conference, along with five shutouts.
Senior midfielder
McKenzie Cook scored a goal and assisted on another against the Roadrunners, and leads the Lopes with 15 points. She was named a First Team All-WAC selection on Tuesday.
The Lopes returned five starters from last season, including Cook.
Hannah Edwards,
Mikaela McGee,
Hannah Nichols and
Kelsey Smith round out the returning starters.
Scouting No. 5 seed Utah Valley (4-13-2, 3-4-1 WAC)
Last week, the Wolverines lost to Seattle U at home 2-0. They finished the regular season with a 0-3-1 record in the final four games.
Utah Valley's record against WAC Tournament teams this season was 1-3-1. This will be the first time that Utah Valley has hosted the WAC Tournament. The Wolverines won last year's tournament in Phoenix.
Since joining the WAC in 2013, the Wolverines have a 6-3 conference tournament record and have made two NCAA tournament appearances.
Redshirt freshman Sadie Brockbank leads Utah Valley offensively with seven goals and three assists. Redshirt senior goalkeeper Sarah Davis allowed nine goals and made 35 saves while starting nine games.
