OREM, Utah – The Grand Canyon women's soccer team gave everything it had to prolong its postseason on Wednesday in the WAC Tournament but the fourth-seeded Lopes fell short to fifth-seeded Utah Valley 2-1 to end the season.
In a season plagued with injury, GCU (6-13-2, 3-3-2 WAC) overcame adversity and brought a 21-player roster to Orem to face tournament host Utah Valley (5-13-2, 3-4-1 WAC).
"It was an extremely long year and a lot of results didn't go our way," head coach
Derek Leader said. "In the end, our team really turned it around for the conference and we played really well considering our situation.
"The girls battled and I'm proud of them. We're going to miss our seniors but we've learned a lot and we'll get better for 2019."
The Wolverines put one on the board in the 12th minute with a through ball behind the GCU defense and followed it up with a second goal in the 32nd minute.
Sophomore
Sandra Hill gave the Lopes light in the 42nd minute with a long shot off a corner kick deflection. Hill fired the ball in the top left corner of the net for her first collegiate goal, trimming the Utah Valley lead to 2-1 for halftime.
The Lopes and the Wolverines battled through chilly conditions at Clyde Field throughout the final 45 minutes. UVU outshot the Lopes, 13-6, and GCU senior goalkeeper
Abby Burton made a pair of saves.
Senior midfielder
McKenzie Cook led GCU with two shots, both on goal, while seniors
Brylee Hawkins and
Sarah Inafuku, junior
Andrea Martinez and Hill each had one.
