Both Grand Canyon tennis teams will be in action Thursday through Sunday at the ITA Southwest Regionals in Southern California.
The Lopes men will compete at Pepperdine while the women will play at San Diego.
Last time out, the GCU men competed at the Oct. 5-7 Aztec Fall Invite at San Diego State. Senior
Lucas Grego and junior
Lorenzo Fucile each won singles titles in the top two flights and senior
Mathieu Rajaonah finished third. Grego had to face teammates
Jakub Novak and
Freddie Grant on his way to the final. In the lone doubles draw, Grego and
Justin Cvitanovic advanced to the semifinals before losing to a doubles pair from Southern Utah.
The women competed simultaneously at the Beach Tennis Tournament at Long Beach State. GCU increased its win total from nine in the previous tournament to 15 in Long Beach. Eight Lopes recorded a win in either singles or doubles play. Sophomores
Autum Prudhomme and
Ludovica Infantino each had two singles wins while
Emilia Occhipinti and
Valentina Mokrova each had one.
Celina Buhr and
Valentina Mokrova won their opening doubles match, and Prudhomme and
Martina Lo Pumo teamed to win a match in the top doubles flight.
Both ITA regionals will showcase the best competition from across the Southwestern U.S. Both teams will face competitors from 12 schools, including USC, UCLA, Arizona State and San Diego.
