ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - In its first outing of the 2017 season, the Grand Canyon men's soccer team dropped its only exhibition game of the season, 2-0, to No. 20 New Mexico on Saturday night. The match served as GCU's preseason opener after last weekend's exhibition against Embry-Riddle was cancelled due to inclement weather. The Lopes will open the regular season with three games on the road beginning at Omaha on Friday at 4 p.m. MST.
Breezy and windy conditions at the UNM Soccer Complex caused issues with some of the longer crosses and clears throughout the contest, and the teams combined to go scoreless in the first 45 minutes.
The scoreless first half wasn't due to lack of scoring opportunities, however. The Lopes had a couple of good looks at the net around the 20th minute, including an attempt from Musa Morris-Demos that missed just wide.
New Mexico had its fair share of on-target shots in the first half, but starting goalkeeper
Corey Marques and the Lopes' defense held true. Marques had three first-half saves.
Grand Canyon made wholesale substitutions entering the second half. Eight minutes in to the second period, New Mexico broke the stalemate with a goal at the 52:18 mark.
Later in the second, the Lobos struck again to take a 2-0 lead. With GCU goalkeeper
Jeremy Pollard on the ground with an injury, the officials allowed play to continue, and New Mexico scored on an open net.
Morris-Demos,
Niki Jackson and freshman
Josh Drack all took multiple shots on the evening to lead GCU's offense. Marques posted over 68 minutes manning the goal and came away with five saves and no goals allowed.
GCU returns to campus for practice leading up to the season opener at Omaha on Friday.
