The Grand Canyon baseball team returns to Brazell Stadium for the first time since opening weekend, hosting a three-game series against the University of San Francisco Dons beginning on Friday. The Lopes are hoping the return to Phoenix will bring with it the same success of opening weekend, which saw GCU defeat No. 22 Oklahoma State 2-1 in a three-game series. Friday's game will feature a 7 p.m. MST first pitch with Saturday and Sunday featuring afternoon first pitches of 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively. All three games will be broadcast on
GCU.tv.
The Lopes continue a stretch of weekend series against West Coast Conference opponents. GCU traveled to Saint Mary's last weekend, hosts the Dons this weekend and travels to Malibu, Calif. to play Pepperdine next weekend.
The three-game series vs. USF kicks off one of the busiest portions of the schedule for Grand Canyon. The Lopes will have games on 13 of the next 17 days. This weekend's series is also the only relief from a stretch of 10 road games in a 13-game span.
Grand Canyon and San Francisco
had one brief encounter a year ago, with the teams meeting at Santa Clara while the finishing touches on USF's home field renovations were taking place. GCU scored four quick runs to jump out to an early lead, but the Dons came roaring back. Behind a three-run sixth inning, San Francisco pulled within a run. Fortunately for Grand Canyon, the bullpen kept USF off of the scoreboard in the final three innings to preserve a 6-5 victory.
The visiting Dons are off to their best start, record-wise, in at least a decade. Coming into Friday's season opener, San Francisco is 8-5 with wins over Northern Colorado, Hawai'i, Utah Valley, Albany and Winthrop. With wins over the Bears and Wolverines, USF is off to a 4-1 start against the WAC.
Most recently, USF split four games at the Coastal Carolina Tournament. San Francisco lost twice to the reigning national champions while picking up a narrow 12-11 win over Albany and a more comfortable victory over Winthrop. This is the first time this season that San Francisco has not had a mid-week series.
San Francisco's offense has proven capable of putting up some gaudy numbers, scoring at a clip of nearly 10 runs per game in last weekend's four-game tournament. The Dons have hit .273 as a team while limiting opponents to a .222 average.
Led by head coach Nino Giarratano in his 19th season, the Dons are coming off of a 22-34 campaign a year ago. San Francisco struggled to an 8-21 record in non-conference action, before finishing off the year on a strong note and going 14-13 in WCC play. While winning just four of its nine conference series, San Francisco was never swept in a WCC series.
