SAN FRANCISCO – The Grand Canyon baseball team went on the road for its first game away from Brazell Stadium, making the trip to California to take on San Francisco. The Lopes did their damage early scoring four runs in the first two innings, defeating the Dons 6-5. GCU is on a three-game winning streak, improving to 8-5.
The Lopes scored three runs in the first inning, the most they have scored in a first inning this season. After
Garrison Schwartz brought in the first run, scoring
Thomas Lerouge,
Preston Pavlica extended GCU's lead to 3-0 with a single down the left field line, scoring
Paul Panaccione and
Austin Bull. Panaccione, Bull, Schwartz and Pavlica combined for five hits, five RBI's and two runs.
Pavlica continues his hot streak, driving nine RBI's in the last three games. For his second straight start, pitcher
Tyler Wyatt went four innings allowing two runs throwing a career high 88 pitches along with a career-high three strikeouts. Lerouge would score for the second time against the Dons in the fourth inning to extend GCU's lead to 5-2. In the top of the sixth, Bull picked up his second RBI of the season off a double, scoring Zach Steirstorfer, giving GCU the 6-2 lead.
The Dons made a comeback in the sixth inning, scoring three runs to trail the Lopes 6-5.
Cameron Brendel came in for relief with the bases loaded and was able to limit the damage, leaving two runners on base to keep the GCU lead alive.
In the eighth inning, head coach
Andy Stankiewicz turned to
Jorge Perez, who came in relief for the first time this season, and stepped up when the team called his number. Perez faced the minimum, going three-up and three-down to turn to
Mick Vorhof in the ninth. The Dons were able to get a runner on second base but Vorhof closed the door, striking out the final batter for his third save of the season.
GCU will now return home to face Cal Poly starting Friday, March 11, for a three-game series against the Mustangs.
