The Grand Canyon baseball team heads back out onto the road for a three-game weekend series with Saint Mary's College beginning on Friday. The Lopes are looking to rebound from a series loss at Wichita State after their opening-weekend series defeat of No. 22 Oklahoma State. All three games will feature afternoon first pitches with Friday's opener set for 3 p.m. MST and the final two games set for 2 p.m. MST starts. All three games will be broadcast live online via
GaelVision.
The trip to Moraga, Calif. marks the first of four trips to the Golden State for the team. GCU will make later trips to Pepperdine, Sacramento State and UC Davis. The Lopes went 5-1 in games played in the state last year, defeating San Francisco, CSU Bakersfield and San José State while also dropping one to the Spartans. The Lopes are currently amid a stretch of 10-of-13 games on the road with the brief interruption coming in the form of a three-game series vs. San Francisco in Phoenix next weekend.
The series pins a pair of teams who met up once last year, with the Lopes
getting the better of the Gaels in the GCU Classic finale at Brazell Stadium. Grand Canyon defeated Saint Mary's 8-3. No. 7 and 8 hitters
Austin Bull and
Krysthian Leal combined to go 7-for-7 on the day with four RBIs.
Saint Mary's is coming off of five straight games against nationally-ranked competition. The Gaels split a four-game series with Washington over the weekend before defeating UC Santa Barbara in a mid-week affair on Tuesday. Against the Huskies, Saint Mary's claimed the series opener and series finale by identical scores of 6-5. Washington dominated the two middle games of the series by a combined score of 22-6.
The Gaels made their first postseason appearance in program history last year, winning the West Coast Conference with an 18-9 record and being shipped off to the Raleigh Regional. Saint Mary's lost both games, one to eventual national champion, Coastal Carolina, and another to Navy.
The Gaels mark the first of three West Coast Conference foes for Grand Canyon in 2017 with later matchups set with San Francisco and Pepperdine.
Thus far, in the head-to-head stat comparisons between the two clubs, Saint Mary's holds the offensive edge with a .308 team batting average while the Lopes marks of 2.82 ERA and .976 fielding percentage hold the advantage.
