Home court advantage helps GCU defeat Southern Utah

PHOENIX – The GCU women's tennis team swept Southern Utah 7-0 on Friday morning on another sunny Arizona day. The Lopes have won two straight contests and even their overall record at 4-4 for the season.
"Our girls did well today with strong performances by all in both singles and doubles," assistant coach Amit Maharaj noted. "We had some close second sets that could have went either way, but we were able to stay focused and fight through."
Grand Canyon quickly swept doubles play, with all three pairs of Lopes winning by commanding scores. That momentum carried into singles competition, as five of the GCU singles players won in two sets and Alexandra Petrzalkova battled back to earn the victory at No. 2.
"Good job to Sasha [Petrzalkova] starting a little slow in her singles match, but she was able to turn it around and comeback to win it in a tiebreaker," Maharaj added. "It's always nice to play at home. The girls enjoy playing on campus where their peers can watch and support them."
Susan Baklini had a nearly perfect outing as she won at No. 3 singles without being scored on, by a 6-0, 6-0 mark, and partnered with Tatum Prudhomme to earn a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Prudhomme also had an excellent day as she quickly swept Marushko of SUU by scores of 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles.
Celina Buhr, Emilia Occhipinti, and Marie Deleval also earned singles victories during the match. Occhipinti has yet to be beaten this season. She carries a perfect 7-0 record in singles play this year, with one match remained unfinished.
The Lopes will return to action in two weeks as they travel to North Carolina for two contests. GCU will face Appalachian State on Thursday, March 9 and Charlotte on Friday, March 10.
