BOONE, NC – Grand Canyon extended their winning streak to three games on Thursday afternoon versus Appalachian State. The Lopes defeated ASU by a score of 6-1 to boost their overall record to 5-4 for the season.
"I definitely like the ring of GCU Lopes beating ASU today," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme noted. "It wasn't Arizona State, it was Appalachian State, but the girls played great today. The other team put up a good fight, and got one of the doubles off of us, but we clinched it on Court 1 to go into the singles up a point."
In doubles play,
Lana Rinaldi and
Emilia Occhipinti earned the first win of the day for GCU at No. 2. They won by a 6-2 score to gain an early advantage for the Lopes. After Appalachian State won on Court 3,
Tatum Prudhomme and
Susan Baklini clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 victory at No. 1.
"The girls kept the momentum going for most of the singles matches," Prudhomme commented. "We had some close sets here and there, on multiple courts, but the girls did a good job of getting the lead and holding on to it. We finished pretty strong with a 6-1 win."
Rinaldi again quickly got on the board in singles play. She topped Bygrave of ASU 6-1, 6-0 at No. 5 to earn another point for the Lopes. Freshman
Celina Buhr then won by scores of 6-3, 6-2 at No. 4 and Prudhomme clinched the match for GCU with a 6-4, 6-3 win on Court 1. Baklini and Occhipinti also picked up wins on Courts 3 and 6.
"We expect a tough match tomorrow against Charlotte," Prudhomme added. "This is a good trip for our tennis program because we haven't been to this area of the country before and we want to get the word out and let other regions know about the level of our program."
