Charlotte, N.C. - The Grand Canyon women's tennis team fell to UNC Charlotte after taking the first point during doubles matches on Friday afternoon. The Lopes fall 5-5 on the season before conference play starting next week.
"The girls dropped a tough battle today," GCU head coach
Greg Prudhomme commented. "It could have gone either way. They came up just short but I am proud of their effort. They competed very well. The day started off great by clinching the doubles point. Tatum (Prudhomme) and Sus (Baklini) clinched the point and Emilia (Occhipinti) and Lana (Rinaldi) had a great battle on court No. 2 and got the job done."
After taking both doubles matches to earn the first point on the day, the Lopes fell 4-2 to during singles. In doubles,
Lana Rinaldi and
Emilia Occhipinti took the first matchup on court No. 2, 6-4 before
Tatum Prudhomme and
Susan Baklini clinched the point at No. 1, 7-5.
"We had momentum going but we knew it was going to be a close one after the close double matches," Prudhomme added. "Our freshmen came through at positions four and six. However, the deciding point was a three-setter and we had to come from behind on court No. 3 with Sus Baklini but it just didn't go our way."
At singles, Occhipinti and
Celina Buhr quickly got the Lopes to a 3-0 start on courts No. 6 and No. 4, respectively. The Niners would respond to earn four-straight points on the rest of the courts in the nail bitter to earn the victory.
"This was a great match to get us ready for conference next weekend," Prudhomme noted. "We accomplished what we set out to do by coming out to new territory. We played against come of the toughest conferences in the country in the ACC and Atlantic 10 and the BIG 10 so it was good for our players to see how our play is to them. Next time we would like to make it a win but we are going to take this close match momentum to conference play."
Next up, the Lopes will travel to Las Cruses, N.M. to play Chicago State on March Saturday, March 18 at 2 p.m. MST and Seattle U on Sunday, March 19 at 9 a.m. MST to start conference play.Â
