LOS ANGELES -- The Grand Canyon men's and women's swimming and diving team continued their success on day two of the dual meet, defeating both Loyola Marymount University and Seattle University for the second consecutive day. The men's team defeated the Redhawks from Seattle University 130-74 while the women defeated Seattle 144-60. The women's team also defeated the Lions from Loyola Marymount 147-57.
"We were a bit sluggish on Friday after traveling," Head Coach Steve Schaffer said. "but I thought we swam pretty well today.
Pretty well was an understatement, as the Lopes dominated Saturday morning with the men winning 10 out of their 11 events while the women won all 11.
Sophomore Wiktor Jaszczak had an outstanding day for the men's team. The Wroclaw, Poland native took first in both the 500 Yard Freestyle (4:44.00) and in the 1000 Yard Freestyle (9:47.03)
Daniil Antipov also had an impressive Saturday for the Lopes as the junior from Krasnoyarsk, Russia won both the 200 Yard Butterfly (1:50.35) and the 50 Yard Freestyle (20.59) and contributed to the first place finish in the 400 Yard Freestyle Relay (3:04.98) with Mazen El Kamash, Viktor Kertesz and Mark Nikolaev.
Estela Davis Ortiz and Alyssa Christianson were a few of the many bright spots for the Lopes women's team. Davis Ortiz, the senior from Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, took first in the 200 Yard Butterfly (2:04.55) and contributed to the 200 Yard Medley Relay (1:46.50) with Marina McInelly, Samiha Mohsen and Alyssa Christianson, while Christianson, the sophomore from Montrose, Colorado also finished first in the 200 Yard IM (2:08.09) and in the 200 Yard Breaststroke (2:21.06).
"We are improving on our season best performances," Schaffer said. "It will be interesting to see how we do in two weeks against stronger competition."
The Lopes will return home for their first home meet of the season at their new home facility, the Fr Edward J. Reese Aquatic Center on the campus of Brophy Catholic College Prepatory, as they take on the Air Force Academy and the University of Idaho in another dual meet on Friday November 3 and Saturday November 4.
