PHOENIX – This weekend, the GCU men's volleyball team will play its final two regular season games of the year. On Friday evening, the Lopes will take on the Concordia Irvine Eagles for the second time this season. In the season finale, Grand Canyon will face the Benedictine University Eagles on Saturday night. GCU ended its MIVA season with an 8-8 record and the team has an overall mark of 15-11.
The Lopes traveled to play Concordia on Feb. 25 and suffered a tough defeat, losing by identical scores of 25-22 in three straight sets. GCU got off to a slow start in each set and struggled to recover. At the time, the Eagles were 10-2 but have faced some stiffer competition recently and now have a record of 13-6. Last season, GCU split matches with Concordia.
Head coach Shawn Patchell is finishing his third season at the helm of the Eagles program. Junior Andrew Hammer leads the Concordia offense with 151 kills from his outside hitter position. The Eagles are currently on a three-game winning streak, and the matchup with GCU will be their season finale.
Benedictine University at Mesa is led by head coach Steve Crook. The team has an overall record of 11-10 but has lost their last four games, all to Hope International. GCU defeated Hope International in four set during the first match of the year. The Eagles are led by a duo of freshmen, Ryan Olsen and Logan Adcock, who both have tallied over 200 kills this season.
The game on Saturday will be the first matchup between Grand Canyon and Benedictine. GCU's senior night will be held before the game to honor seniors
Gerrard Lipscombe,
Christian Ward,
Tanner Maxwell,
Sean Saxton, and
Aquiles Montoya III.
The seniors have provided tremendous leadership both on and off the court this season. Lipscombe is leading the team with 310 kills and 122 digs as an outside hitter. Ward has been a force blocking-wise as he is second on the team with 100 blocks while adding 118 kills of his own. Maxwell has stepped up towards the second half of the season as an opposite hitter to tally 123 kills and 81 digs. Both Montoya and Saxton have been valuable assets and vocal leaders for the Lopes all season.
The first match with Concordia will be played at 5 p.m. on Friday, April 8 and the second, against Benedictine, will begin at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 9. Both games will take place in Antelope Gymnasium.
