PHOENIX -- After finishing on the wrong end of three one-run ballgames last weekend, Grand Canyon's schedule does not ease up as the Lopes pay a visit to Seattle U. The Redhawks are tied for first in the WAC standings with the Lopes' last opponent, New Mexico State, with 8-1 conference records. The three-game series features start times of 5 p.m. on Friday, 2 p.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. on Sunday. All games will be aired on the GCU Radio Network with Sunday's finale also being streamed on the WAC Digital Network.
LAST TIME OUTThe same storyline played out three consecutive times in GCU's series vs. New Mexico State. In all three games, Grand Canyon had the tying run in scoring position in the bottom of the ninth but failed to score in all three instances and lost by one run. The Lopes were swept in a WAC series for the first time since returning to Division I.
The Lopes left a total of 31 runners on base over the course of the series. Seventh innings doomed Grand Canyon as the Lopes allowed what proved to be game-winning home runs in the seventh inning in all three contests.
SERIES HISTORYThe two schools had never met until the Lopes rejoined the WAC in 2014. Grand Canyon has won both series two games to one, with one series coming in each location.
Last year's late-season showdown featured two high-scoring GCU wins (12-8, 13-11) and a narrow 3-2 loss in Game 2. The rubber match finale was decided in 13 innings, with a Panaccione 13th-inning homer being the difference.
PITCHING PREVIEWCameron Brendel and
Jake Repavich stay in their spots in this weekend's rotation, while
Tyler Wyatt starts for the first time since March 15 vs. New Mexico.
Ted Hammond will start the opener for Seattle U, ranking second in the WAC in opponent batting average (.200). In his last appearance, Hammond surrendered seven hits and five runs to North Dakota in 3.2 innings of work. Left-hander Nick Meservey takes an impressive 1.52 ERA into Saturday's game. Sunday's starter for the Redhawks is TBA.
SCOUTING SEATTLE UAfter nearly claiming the WAC Regular Season title last year, the Redhawks are off to a good start in attempting to claim the title this season. The Redhawks lead the WAC with a 20-11 overall record and are tied atop the conference standings with the Lopes' opponent of last weekend, New Mexico State, with an 8-1 mark.
The Redhawks have amassed their 20 wins via a four-game sweep of Bowling Green, three wins vs. Oakland, three wins vs. Minnesota, and three-game WAC sweeps of Chicago State and CSU Bakersfield. Seattle U lost three of four games to Saint Mary's (CA) and was swept by UC Irvine.
Sophomore infielder Sean Sutton (.379) and senior infielder Sheldon Stober (.376) lead the Redhawks and place top five in the WAC in batting average.
As a team, the Redhawks lead the conference in many main statistical categories, including average (.308), slugging (.438), on-base (.405), ERA (3.50) and opponent average (.239).
ON THE HORIZONFollowing this weekend's series in Seattle, the Lopes will continue a stretch of eight straight games on the road. Grand Canyon will continue WAC play with a weekend series at North Dakota next weekend and then will travel to play road games at Big-12 foes Kansas and Kansas State.
