PHOENIX – The GCU men's volleyball program turned in their best regular season performance in team history during the 2016 season. Finishing with a record of 17-11, the Lopes will enter the MIVA Tournament this weekend on a three-game winning streak. Grand Canyon is a #5 seed in the tournament and will face #4 Lewis University on Friday, April 15 for the first round of action.
Earlier this season, GCU traveled to play a pair of matches with the Lewis Flyers. During the Friday matchup, the Lopes were swept in three sets by scores of 25-17, 25-22, and 25-21. Despite the tough loss, GCU bounced back on the following night to win by 25-21, 25-23, and 25-21 scores and complete its own three set sweep. At the time, Lewis was ranked #13 in the nation and the win was the first GCU victory over the Flyers in school history.
The Flyers are currently ranked #14 nationally and finished the regular season with an overall record of 17-12 and a league record of 10-6. Lewis has eliminated Grand Canyon from the MIVA Tournament in each of the past three years. Led by head coach Dan Friend, the Flyers have one of the most established and respected programs in men's volleyball.
This season, GCU was led by their two outside hitters. Senior
Gerrard Lipscombe tallied 344 kills and 139 digs for the year.
Shalev Saada, a sophomore, recorded 266 kills and 97 digs during the regular season.
Michael Milstein leads GCU with 785 assists,
Sky Engleman has a team-high 168 digs, and
Christian Ward has added 117 blocks to pace the Lopes.
The match against Lewis will be played in Romeoville, Ill. and begin at 5 p.m. If the Lopes win, they will continue on towards the Semifinals which will be held on Wednesday, April 20.
