CHICAGO, Ill. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team began its final weekend of play in the Western Athletic Conference with a win over UT Rio Grande Valley. The Lopes won eight of the nine matches played against the Vaqueros to improve to 8-8 this season.
"The women played one of their best matches of the season," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We got off to a great start in doubles and we were able to carry the momentum into singles. UTRGV is a very good team and they compete really hard so it was big for us to come away with eight wins."
The Lopes swept all three matches in doubles play starting with a win on Court 2 from
Alexandra Petrzalkova and
Kylie Waschuk defeating UTRGV 6-1.
Tatum Prudhomme and
Susan Baklini clinched the match for GCU with a 6-2 win on Court 1. Completing the sweep on Court 3 was
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi with the 6-4 victory.
UTRGV was only able to pick up a win on Court 1 in singles but the Lopes played exceptional tennis starting with a win on Court 5 as Rinaldi pulled out the 6-0, 7-5 win. Macukat followed up with an impressive performance on Court 4 with a 6-3, 6-1 victory to give GCU the 3-0 lead. Baklini clinched the match for GCU on Court 3 with a 6-3, 6-3 win.
Marie Deleval stepped in on Court 6 and came away with a 6-4, 6-4 win and the final victory of the day came on Court 2 from Petrzalkova in a three-set win. Petrzalkova took the first set 6-4 and after dropping the second set 7-5, Petrzalkova came out on top in the final set 6-4 for GCU's sixth win of the season.
GCU will play its final conference match tomorrow against Missouri-Kansas City.
