CHICAGO, Ill. – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team closed out its Western Athletic Conference schedule in grand fashion with an impressive win over Missouri-Kansas City. The Lopes ended conference with a 4-1 record after sweeping the Roos 7-0 to improve to 9-8 this season.
"The women had a great finish to the conference season," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We played some of our best tennis these past few matches that we have played all season. We have worked hard all season to improve and our play has evolved and it was on display today."
GCU was impressive in doubles all weekend, going a perfect 6-0 against UT Rio Grande Valley and UMKC.
Lana Macukat and
Lana Rinaldi started doubles with a 6-3 win on Court 3 and clinching the match for GCU was
Tatum Prudhomme and
Susan Baklini on Court 1 with a 6-3 victory.
Alexandra Petrzalkova and
Kylie Waschuk completed the sweep in doubles with a 6-4 win on Court 2.
The Lopes were impressive in singles taking all six matches, including two three-set victories. Prudhomme took Court 1 in back-to-back 6-4 sets and Rinaldi was dominant on Court 5 in a 6-2, 6-1 victory. Petrzalkova took the first set 6-2 on Court 2 but was forced to a third set after UMKC took the second set 7-5. With the match on the line, Petrzalkova came away with the 6-4 win in the final set.
Baklini went 2-0 in singles for the weekend after a 7-6 (3), 6-4 win on Court 3 and in another three-set match, Macukat won on Court 4 7-5, 5-7, 10-6. In the final win of the day,
Marie Deleval took the match on Court 6 7-5, 6-2.
