GCU sweeps Chicago State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Make it two wins in-a-row in conference for the Grand Canyon men's tennis team after a dominating performance over Chicago State. The Lopes swept the Cougars 7-0 for the team's 10th win of the season.

"The guys did a great job of keeping the momentum after yesterday's win over UT Rio Grande Valley," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "We got off to a quick start in doubles and carried it over in singles."

GCU took care of the Cougars in quick fashion in doubles play with two 6-3 victories on Courts 1 and 2 to take the early 1-0 lead. Adrian Legarreta and Gregoire Balencu gave GCU the 1-0 lead with a 6-3 victory on Court 2 and clinching the point for the Lopes was Felix Schueller and Alexander Roggenkamp on Court 1 with the 6-3 win.

GCU impressed in singles play sweeping Chicago State in straight sets. The Lopes had three 6-0 matches throughout singles and it started with Mathieu Rajaonah sweeping Gonzalo Martinez on Court 4. The bottom of the lineup continued to pile up the wins early in singles for GCU as Meidy Chazeau defeated Rohan Wattley 6-2, 6-0, clinching the match for GCU as Justin Cvitanovic won by default on Court 6.

Mitch Maroscher would defeat Gabriel Niculescu 6-4, 6-2 on Court 1, Schueller would top Christian Gonzalez 6-3 6-2 on Court 2 and wrapping up the match with a win on Court 3 was Roggenkamp with a 6-2, 6-4 win.

"We were hoping that we could come out with a lot of energy and the guys followed through," Prudhomme said. "We now need to rest up for what we know is going to be a tough match tomorrow against New Mexico State."

The Lopes will close out their three-match WAC weekend on Saturday, March 26, with a battle against New Mexico State, who was picked to finish second behind GCU.
