DENVER – As the Grand Canyon men's tennis team begins its conference schedule, expectations are high for the Lopes. GCU has been picked to finish in first place in the Western Athletic Conference Pre-Season Coaches Poll.
GCU received four first-place votes for a total of 21 points, ahead of New Mexico State that received two first-place votes. Grand Canyon had a successful non-conference schedule this year, going 8-6, winning four of its last six matches.
Last year, GCU went 4-2 in conference with all matches on the road just like this season. Conference play kicks off this week as the Lopes head to Las Cruces, N.M. for three matches in three days. GCU will start on Thursday, March 24, with a matchup against UT Rio Grande Valley and will go through March 25th with matchups against Chicago State and New Mexico State. It will be a big test for GCU to start conference play as the Lopes went 1-2 last year against UTRGV, CSU and NMSU with a 5-2 win over the Cougars.
The Lopes are tied in the WAC for the most wins within the conference with eight this season. Freshman
Mathieu Rajaonah leads the WAC for the best winning percentage with a perfect 4-0 record in singles play.
Alexander Roggenkamp has made his stamp on Court 3 with seven wins, the most in the WAC this season and
Justin Cvitanovic is tied for the most wins on Court 6 this season in the conference with six wins.
