GCU downs Seattle 6-1 in WAC play

PHOENIX – After a disappointing loss to league-leading New Mexico State on Saturday, the GCU women's tennis team rebounded to defeat Seattle 6-1 on Sunday morning. The Lopes nearly swept the contest and improve their record to 7-8 overall.
"The girls did a great job today bouncing back from yesterday's loss," head coach Greg Prudhomme stated. "It [the loss to New Mexico State] made what the girls did today that much better. It was a great rebound."
GCU swept the doubles competition to earn the first point of the match. The teams of Prudhomme/Baklini, Petrzalkov/Waschuk, and Macukat/Rinaldi all won their matches to get the Lopes out to an early advantage.
In singles play, Alexandra Petrzalkov put together another solid performance at No. 2 to defeat her opponent 6-3, 6-4. Susan Baklini also made quick work in the third position as she won her match 6-3, 6-3.
The double partners, Lana Macukat and Lana Rinaldi, had a successful day overall. After pulling out a close doubles victory together, both won by identical 6-2, 6-1 scores at No. 4 and No. 5.
Tatum Prudhomme faced stiff competition at No. 1 singles. After dropping the first set 1-6, she rebounded to take the second set 6-4 and then proceeded to win the tiebreaker by a 10-6 margin.
"It was our third match in three days and a lot of the girls were a little bit banged up from the long, tough matches yesterday." Prudhomme said. "To come out and take care of Seattle 6-1, it shows that we are one of the top teams in the conference and we are going to keep fighting until the end and see where we finish."
After the long weekend, the Lopes will have a few days to recover before they resume WAC play against UTRGV and UMKC next weekend. GCU will face UTRGV on Friday, April 1 and UMKC on Saturday, April 2. Both matches will be played in Chicago.
