Lopes drop nail biter to Pacific

MANOA, Hawai'i – The Grand Canyon women's tennis team fell victim to another tough 4-3 loss as they wrapped up play in Hawai'i facing Pacific. The Lopes will return home to Phoenix with a 5-7 record before heading into conference play.
"Definitely mixed emotions after today's match," head coach Greg Prudhomme said. "I am very proud of how hard the girls fought. We started the match great with the doubles point against a team we have faced in the past. We had two and a half hours of battling with a great team and I am disappointed the girls weren't able to cross the finish line with a win because they deserved it."
Despite a 5-7 record, the Lopes have competed in every match this season, having lost their fourth 4-3 match this season.
"We have been close all season to teams that are nationally ranked," Prudhomme said. "We are right there so we have to keep pushing and the wins will start coming."
GCU started the match by taking the doubles point, winning on Courts 1 and 3. The Lana Macukat and Lana Rinaldi duo defeated Pacific's Maayan Sela and Sabrina Rodriguez on Court 3 6-3 for GCU's first win of the day. Clinching the doubles point for the Lopes on Court 1 was Tatum Prudhomme and Susan Baklini with the 6-3 victory.
Baklini capped off a 2-0 day against the Tigers with a win on Court 3, giving GCU its second victory. Baklini was in a tight battle in the first set with Cristina Ruizand pulled out a 7-5 victory in the first set and to seal the deal, Baklini closed out the match in the second set with a 6-3 victory.
GCU's final victory of the day came on Court 5 from Rinaldi, defeating Sabrina Rodriguez 7-6, 6-3. GCU was close in all matches, forcing two matches to three sets on Court 1 and 4. The Lopes return home to kick off their WAC schedule at home with a match against Chicago State on Friday, March 18.
